Most immigration procedures in Spain require foreign nationals to pay an administrative fee, which is more locally known as “tasa”. Paying a tasa requires a Form 790, with different codes.
From NIE and TIE applications to applying for residence permits, it is essential to understand how to complete and pay a Form 790 correctly. This article will explain how to pay these fees, know which Form 790 code to use, and how to avoid mistakes that may cause delays in your application.
A “tasa” is any administrative fee for most immigration and residence procedures. This is paid using the Form 790, which comes in different codes (ex. 012, 038, 052, etc.) depending on the procedure: such as NIE and TIE issuance or renewals, residence permits, international mobility authorization (for digital nomads), etc.
Each procedure has its own code in the Form 790:
790-012: is commonly used for obtaining or renewing the TIE, getting assigned a NIE, and other short-term basic procedures.
790-038: is needed for authorizations related to employment or work permits under UGE.
790-052: is required for initial, temporary, or extended residence authorizations.
Access the official Spanish Government portal for tasas (usually found on the Sede Electrónica for the specific procedure). For immigration/extranjería forms, you’ll find the link in the Policía or Extranjería site.

Once you’ve selected the correct 790 procedure (ex. 790-012 for obtaining your TIE), fill in your personal details. These details include your name, passport, NIE (if applicable), address, and the specific procedure you’re paying for. Most times the form automatically shows the amount due.
For reference (as of February 2026)***:
***Administrative fees are subject to change every year.
If paying in person, print the completed form, usually in three copies. If paying online, follow the steps below.
There are two main payment options:
❌ Filling out the wrong form code (012 vs 052)
❌ Not keeping a stamped receipt
❌ Paying the wrong amount — fees change annually
Paying Spanish tasas as an expat or digital nomad is straightforward once you know which Form 790 code applies. Here are the key steps:
By following these steps carefully, you can ensure your immigration or remote-work process in Spain goes smoothly without unnecessary delays.
